The Importance of Movement and Learning
It was long before the modern day researches about the significances of active movement of child impacted developmental processes; Maria Montessori had already explained the importance of the entire relationship of movement with learning.
Maria Montessori observed in asylums in the first quarter of last century, the children with mental disturbances even tried moving for reaching out to various things, she asserted that “mental development must be connected with movement and be dependent on it”. She also claimed that, “the child needs activity concentrated on some tasks that require movement of the hands guided by intellect”.
Montessori emphasized on movements being guided by intellect and not movements for the sake of movements, but purposeful movements.
A study was conducted in 1963 by Held and Hein on the impact of crawling and grasping in babies brain development. More studies were conducted after 1963 and it was found that if the infant explored the environment with his hands, the more advanced he became in his ability of perceiving object boundaries.
A very recent research on monkeys and adult humans have found that we respond to only what we can interact with, and once the infants reach out to products, they become capable of interacting with the environment. The sooner they start reaching out, the earlier their cognitive abilities mature.
It was further proved that the interaction helped increase the interest in knowledge of the mental world and physical world as well i.e. being able to share the experience of other people. Furthermore, various other studies have discussed the significances of goal oriented movement. A book by Angeline Stoll Lillard has written that, “purposeful movement links to neurological change; mere movement does not”.
Your Task as Parents: Help the Child to Help Himself –Choose Montessori Education System

- When he is incapable of crawling, hand a mobile on his baby cot that will move with the passing current and will draw shapes or reflect colors. His eyes will move along and choose the abstract of his choice.
- At a slight older age that that, attach things like a bell with a ribbon, closer to his reach, so his hands can move and feel the power of “I can do it myself”.
- By 9 months, he would have mastered the grip on his things, start giving him more items to hold and perfect his developmental acquisition.
- By 18 months, you should give him practical experiences. He should practical life activities as preparation of things or doings at home: washing vegetables, cutting bananas, laying out the table, watering the plants etc.
The more experience your child receives, the better he gets at performing complex activities. The joy a child receives is directly from how he performs and how you watch him excel, just like you.
